The History Channel: Save Our History

Created by The History Channel, Save Our History is a national education program that involves students in local preservation projects. Youths work side-by-side with preservation professionals to salvage treasures in their community.

National History Day

National History Day (NHD) is a year-long education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers based on research related to an annual theme.  These projects are then evaluated at local, state and national competitions.

National Register of Historic Places

A program of the National Park Service, the National Register of Historic Places contains approximately 78,000 listings. Each site has been chosen for its significance to American history. The designated landmarks include buildings, archeological sites and cultural landmarks.

National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP)

Designation by itself does not guarantee preservation. Designation is merely one step in a much longer and more complicated and more important process called ‘stewardship.’ Good stewardship is practically impossible without the bodies and the dollars that the job requires, and the fact is that the agencies responsible for stewardship on our public lands have always been hampered by chronic understaffing and under funding."
–Richard Moe, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation, from Protecting America's Cultural and Natural Heritage for a Second Century: The Past, Present, and Future of the Antiquities Act, Forum Journal, Fall 2006, Volume 21, No.1

Founded in 1949, the privately funded, nonprofit NTHP coordinates a variety of preservation programs, including Preservation Month, the National Main Street Center and the Center for Preservation Leadership. NTHP also offers help to individuals and groups interested in preserving a site in their community, and publishes Preservation magazine, which is free to members. Each year, the NTHP identifies the “11 Most Endangered Historic Places” in the U.S.

Preservation Alliance of Minnesota

The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota is the only statewide, private, non-profit organization advocating the preservation of Minnesota's historic resources. It works with groups like the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to preserve communities. It steps in when rare sites or structures are threatened, and works to educate citizens about heritage preservation. It develops networks among people and organizations to help increase awareness of state history, community preservation, and important community values.

Preserve America

First Lady Laura Bush chairs this preservation initiative, created in 2003 by the White House. Preserve America’s annual Presidential Awards honor four outstanding groups, businesses, government agencies or individuals for preservation work in their community. The group also has designated more than 240 municipalities as official Preserve America Communities, in recognition of their efforts to save local historic sites and encourage heritage tourism. Preserve America also offers grants of $10,000 to $100,000 to “projects that preserve and use important historic resources for promotion of heritage tourism and other economic revitalization projects.”

PreserveNet

Maintained by Cornell University, PreserveNet provides links to resources that address legal and economic issues around preservation, as well as links to sites with job opportunities for those interested in preservation work. It also lists conference and education information, as well as awards and scholarships for students in the preservation field.

Save America’s Treasures

A partnership between the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Save America’s Treasures is “dedicated to the preservation and celebration of America’s priceless historic legacy.” The group has designated more than 1000 Official Projects that are key to America’s cultural, political, scientific and architectural history. The program provides technical assistance and funding to specific preservation projects.
